There are many temple towns in Karnataka, associated with events from centuries ago, providing a glimpse into the spiritual soul of the region.

Kalasa, the temple town of Karnataka, is a must-visit. Kalasa, located in the picturesque Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka is close to the famous peak of Kudremukh. Sitting on the banks of the River Bhadra, the main attraction of Kalasa town is the Kalaseshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The intricately carved main tower of the temple is one of the defining features of the town as pilgrims from all over the region come to offer their prayers throughout the day.

Known for the revered Annapoorneeshwari Temple, Horanadu is a holy Hindu town located in Malnad, Karnataka. Carpeted with green paddy fields and accompanied by a hilly backdrop, this region lies at an altitude of 2726 feet. With pristine natural beauty, Horanadu is also famous for its extensive collection of dry fruits, cashew nuts and almonds along with tea, coffee and spice markets. All this can be bought here at much cheaper rates than in the cities.

According to legends, this temple was established in the 8th century by Maharishi Agasthya. Thousands of devotees visit Horanadu on the occasion of Navratri. Dedicated to Devi Durga, this nine-day festival is celebrated with fervour at the Annapoorna Temple. The surrounding looks fresh and verdant during the winter months, and there is a chill in the air. On the way to Horanadu.

The famous Adi Shankara, who is regarded as the greatest reformer and most inspirational teacher of the ‘samartha’, established Sringeri Mutt in the 8th century AD. Erected on the banks of the Tunga River, Sringeri Mutt is a rustic ancient temple with a lot of history attached to it. With a vibrant history and great religious significance attached to this iconic temple, the atmosphere of the temple brims with power, and at the same time, it emanates tranquillity and peace.

Sri Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada was referred to as Jagadguru or the teacher of the world. Sringeri Mutt is the first of the four Amnaya Peethams, which means the throne of the Vedas, established over twelve centuries ago in honour of the sacred traditions of Santana Dharma. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, who is the Goddess of Knowledge. The setting of the Sringeri Mutt on the banks of a gently hustling river as the Western Ghats combined with the soft distant murmur of waterfalls.

Belur, situated on the banks of river Yagachi, 38 km from Hassan, is a world famous tourist destination. Belur was the erstwhile capital of the Hoysalas and referred to as Velapur, Velur and Belahur at different points in history. The town is renowned for its Chennakeshava temple, one of the finest examples of Hoysala workmanship. The temple was consecrated by the famous Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana to mark his victories in 1116 AD against the Cholas and called the Vijaya Narayana.

The Hoysalas used soft soapstone for their structures as they were found suitable for intricate carvings. Enclosed by a Prakara with a Gopurabuilt in the Vijayanagar style, the temple stands on a platform or Jagati and looks like a huge casket. The fine workmanship and skill visible in this masterpiece is truly breathtaking.
